Based on reports from Chinese media, construction on the Shanghai Disneyland Resort is expected to kick off in November 2010, following the closure of the Expo 2010.

The first phase of the project will include a theme park and supporting facilities and will span four square kilometers with the theme park covering one square kilometer. The whole project will take five to six years to finish.

Early in Nov 2009, the municipal government of Shanghai obtained approval from the National Development and Reform Commission to build the Disneyland Resort in the city.

Shanghai Disneyland’s Chinese partner, Shanghai Shendi Shendi Group Corporation, was established in August 2010. They will set up a joint venture with Walt Disney to oversee the project.

Disney opened a theme park in Hong Kong in 2005.
