Cao Cao Bears a Pigeon Pair at Her First Reproduction
8/6/2008

On August 6th, 2008, good news comes from China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (CCRCGP) again. Panda Cao Cao, who mated at Wolong on March 31st, gives birth to a pigeon pair to cheer for the Olympic Games together with her new-born babies.

At 8:00pm of August 5th, Cao Cao looks extremely upset, biting the fence of her enclosure ceaselessly. Meanwhile, she has valsalva maneuver and does cunnilingus frequently. At 2:40am of August 6th, amniotic fluid is broken for the first time and at 3:29 for the second time. Then, the valsalva maneuver and cunnilingus become more frequent. As it is her first reproduction, employees become more intense. Since Cao Cao has obvious reproduction behavior, they have been waiting at the control section and been ready for the birth. After several hour´s anxious waiting, at 7:29am, the first baby is born with a sonorous sound. What makes the employees happier is that Cao Cao bears the second one only ten minutes later.

As the employees say, it is very rare for the giant panda to bear two cubs in ten minutes. The two babies weigh 206.7g and 192.6g respectively and they are of large build and very healthy, which is also uncommon in the giant panda´s twin history.

Even though it is Cao Cao´s first time to give birth to cubs, she bites the babies lightly and adjusts many positions. She holds her babies till they stop crying. She looks a little clumsy because of lacking experience. However, it has no effect on her maternity. She is believed to be an excellent mother.
