| Brief Introduction of Guilin |
A visit to Guilin has been compared
to jumping into a Chinese landscape painting. Chinese and western
travelers alike flock to this celebrated scenic wonder of lush
valleys and rivers nestled among jagged cone-shaped karst ( eroded
limestone ) formations. During the Qin Dynasty ( 221-206 B.C ),
Guilin, then an ancient market town, gained recognition as a
river transport hub with the completion of the Ling Canal in
214 B.C which connected the Pearl and Yangtze rivers systems.
Many historical sites and cultural relics have been left behind
in Guilin since then. Guilin became the political center for
Guangxi Region since Tang Dynasty ( 618-907 A.D.) and its economy
and culture developed rapidly. Under the Song Dynasty ( 960-1280
A.D.), Guilin was not only the political ,economic and cultural
center in Guangxi, but also one of the most important cities
in southern China and was known as "Capital City of Southwestern
China".
Now travelers from all over the world come in increasing numbers.
More than 35 heads of state from different countries have been
visited Guilin, and more than half a million travelers came
from abroad only in 2001. |

Guilin Sightseeing Highlight / Guilin Travel Guide |
[Elephant
Trunk Hill]
Located on the west bank of the Li River by a small branch called
Peach blossom River, the hill resembles a huge elephant standing
on the bank of the river, sucking up water with its long trunk.
The trunk is particularly striking and lifelike when viewed
either nearby or afar. A circular foot cave called Shui Yue
Dong (Moon-In-the Water Cave) separates the trunk and the body.
A 3-story Ming Dynasty (1368-1644 A.D) brick pagoda rises from
the top of hill. |

[Seven Star Park]
With an area of 100 hectare, the Seven Star Park is the largest
and one of the most beautiful parks in Guilin. The park is so
named for the seven peaks which correspond to the number of
stars in the Big Dipper. There are many scenic tourist spots
in the park, such as the Flower Bridge, the Seven Star Cave,
the Banzai Garden and the Camel Hill. |

[Li
River]
Li River is by far the main reason to visit Guilin. Double-decker
and triple-decker river boats which weigh anchor from a pier
at Zhujiang, about 40 minutes from Guilin by bus, and meander
through the sleepy countryside are relaxing way to enjoy the
superlative river scenery and life along its banks. In contrast
to the burgeoning cities of the north, it is quiet here; the
rural scenery is magnificent. You will enjoy the picturesque
mountains, peaceful green fields, farms and villages with water
buffalos, cows wondering around on both sides of the river bank.
After about 4.5 hours, the one-thousand-year-old town - Yangshuo,
the disembarking point, comes into sight. It is well-worth browsing
around this quaint town and its environs. Have a short exploration
to the old town before to be transferred back to Guilin city. |

[Reed Flute Cave]
Aside ten minutes drive (half hour bike ride) from downtown,
the cave is one of thelargest
known examples of what each tropical karst cone conceals within
it. The script writers and set designers for Star Trek would
have a field day in this cavernous underground stalactite/stalagmite
maze-style theater. The dropping water is rich and the dripstones
are not only in various types but also in big size, displaying
a wonderful cave world. This cave was called "the Art Gallery
of Mother Nature" Colored fluorescent lights which cast shadows
and illuminate shapes of imaginary animals, fruits and vegetables
complete the unworldly effect. |

[Fubo Hill]
Fubo Hill is famous for its picturesque shape and beautiful
caves. Located in the northeastern part of the city, it stands
by the Li River, with half of its eastern foot submerged in
water. A deep pool of crystal clear, mirror smooth water is
at the northern foot of the hill. It is known for its Tang and
Song Dynasty Buddhist carvings in the foot cave named Returned
Pearl Cave, all accessible by steps leading up and down the
east and west side. |

[Decai Hill (Folded
Brocade Hill)]
Decai Hill, trending horizontally across a tiny corner of the
northern part of the city, is another area of imaginative scenes.
It consist four peaks. The main peak is Bright Moon Peak with
a height of 223 meters above sea level. The Wind Cave, located
half way up the hill, is the main attraction in the Decai Hill.
This cave looks like a gourd with its two spacious halls joined
by a bottleneck passage through which air blows all the year
round. Inscriptions of poets and other writings of various dynasties
as well as statues, all 19 inches high, are carved into the
walls of the cave. These are attributed to the Tang (618-908A.D)
and Song (960-1280 A.D) Dynasties. Climbing more than 200 steps
from the cave, one reaches the summit, one gets a birds-eye-view
of the whole city. |

[Longsheng]
Longsheng is located in the mountainous region on the northeastern
part of Guilin. The natural beauty and the colorful ethnic
Chinese cultures and customs attract people from all over
the world.
After 2.5 hours drive (115KM beautiful mountain road) you
will get to the Longji area, Heping Township of Longsheng
County. Visit Zhuang and Yao Minority tribes villages and
some families if you like. Those ethnic girls dressed in their
own colors may have a demonstration on hair combing or singing
and dancing upon guests' request and gratuity. Clients will
enjoy the beautiful terrace rice fields after getting to the
summit of Longji (Dragon's backbone). The terrace rice fields
were first built in the Yuan Dynasty ( about 800 years ago)
and completed in the Qing dynasty as the crystallization of
the wisdom and labor of the Zhuang people. The terraced fields
are built along the slope winding from the riverside up to
the mountaintop, with the highest place of an elevation of
885m and the lowest 380m. The coiling line spirals up from
the mountain foot to the top, making the mountain looks like
huge snail seen afar. |
