Brief Introduction
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum is located in the Zhong Mountain Scenic Area in the east suburb of Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province. It covers an area of 80,000 square meters (about 20 acres).
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum was built for Dr. Sun Yat-sen who was recognized by the communists and Kuomingtang alike as the father of modern China. He was born in 1866 in Xiangshan County (Now belongs to Zhongshan City), Guangdong Province and died on March 12, 1925, in Beijing, leaving behind an unstable Chinese republic. He had wished to be buried in Nanjing, no doubt with greater simplicity than the Mning-style tomb his successors built for him.
The mausoleum is situated at the foot of the second peak of Mount Zijin. Construction of the tomb started in 1926, taking three years. He was buried here on June 1, 1929. The whole Mausoleum Scenic Area represents an alarm bell as seen from the air, symbolizing the noble spirit and heroic efforts of Dr. Sun Yat-sen´s devotion to the Chinese people, fight of oppression and wining the independence of China.
The mausoleum itself lies at the top of an enormous stone stairway--a breathless 392 steps. At the start of the path stands a dignified stone gateway built of Fujian marble, with a roof of blue--glazed tiles. The blue and white sun on the blue background of the Kuomingtang flag.
