Dzonggyob Lhukhang Park Travel Guide

Behind the Potala Palace, there is a peaceful place with old willow trees and green pool. Here is the famous garden Dzonggyob Lhukhang Park, which is a well-known water area near Potala Palace. All the photos from water inverted reflection were taken from this park. In Tibetan language, Dzonggyob means backside of palace; Lhukhang means Lushen Hall; while Lushen is a joint name of gods living under the earth and water in Tibetan Buddhism and Bonism. Lushen in Chinese is translated to Dragon God. So, the pool in the park is named Dragon King Pool.

In 17th century, when Potala Palace was in extension program, local people dug earth from the originated place of Dzonggyob Lhukhang Park. Thus Dragon King Pool was formed. In the period of sixth Dalai Lama (1683-1706 A.D.), a pavilion was built according to the Tibetan Buddist Ritual in the middle of the pool and a five-hole stone arch bridge was also built to link the the pavilion and the park.

In 2006, Lhasa government had the park renovated thoroughly. After renovation, the park is divided into five areas, Folk Custom Activities Area, Eco-water Area, Dragon King Pool Area, Water Activities Area, and Cultural Activities Area.
