Brief Introduction to Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountain)
Located in the East China's Anhui Province, Huangshan, a 2,200-year-old city in East China's Anhui Province, was known as Xin'an, or Huizhou Prefecture, in ancient times. The present name, bestowed a few years ago, comes from its world-renowned Huangshan Mountains (the Yellow Mountains). The city governs the districts of Tunxi, Huangshan and Huizhou and the four counties of Shexian, Xiuning, Yixian and Qimen.
Mt. Huangshan (also known as Yellow Mountain) is the supreme example of Chinese mountain scenery and is a prime model for classic landscape paintings, as the poets and painters of old China amply testify. Within an area of 154 square kilometers, the mountain offers a crowd of peaks. 72 of them have names indicating the shapes they resemble. Lotus, Brightness Apex and Celestial Capital are the three major ones, all rising above 1,800 meters. Not only known for its lofty peaks, but also steep valleys, winding brooks, luxuriant pine trees, jagged rocks in strange shapes, bubbling hot springs and the rapidly changing clouds, it is undoubtedly China’s most celebrated mountain for all its grandeur and beauty. In 1990 Yellow Mountain was declared a World Natural and Cultural Heritage by UNESCO Heritage Committee. |

The Huangshan / Yellow Mountains have for many years been attracting tourists of all agesand nationalities, noted for their infinitely enchanting scenery and fantastic peaks. They offer a constantly changing panorama that stir up vivid images. From one season to another, from rain to shine and sunrise to sunset, the mountains take on different expressions. If you visit the mountains a thousand times, you will discover new beauty and enjoy new experiences each time. The Yellow Mountains are not merely mountains, but a sea - a sea of mountain peaks, a sea of clouds, a sea of pine trees, a sea of flowers and a sea of light. They are characterized by quaint pines, unusual rocks, a sea of clouds and hot springs, which are recognized as their four wonders. Where there are peaks, there are wonderful rocks. The steeper the rocky peaks, the more irregular the shapes of the pines. More interestingly, the peaks, rocks, pine trees, waterfalls and springs all bear descriptive names. Not relying on artificial decorations, the Yellow Mountains look simple and natural, manifesting youthful vigour and heroic grandeur.
[Hot Spring Scenic Area]
Hot Springs Scenic Area was named the Heaven of Peace with peach blossoms in the ancient times, because of many peach trees growing on the Peach Hill at its left side. But now it is named Hot Spring Scenic Area. Locate among Peach Blossoms Peak, Purple Stone Peak and the Clear Lake Peak, it features with clear water, unique stones and historical relics. This scenic area is the hub leading to the south the entrance to the mountain as well as to other scenic areas.
The hot springs here have been in use as a resort and health spa for over a thousand years. Gushing forth from the foot of Purple Cloud Peak, it has never run dry during the most severe droughts nor over flooded during excessive rain. The spring is a mineral spring, and the Chinese swear by the restorative and healing power. The spring's clear water stays at about 42C degrees (about 108F) and gets used for both bathing and drinking. Some 48 tons of water an hour are produced by the spring.
[Villages of Xidi and Hongcun]
The villages of Xidi and Hongcun are graphic illustrations of a unique type of human settlement created 500 years ago. In their buildings and their street patterns, the two villages reflect the socio-economic structure of a long stable period in Chinese history. The traditional non-urban settlements of China, which have to a very large extent disappeared during the past century, are exceptionally well preserved here. The two traditional villages of Xidi and Hongcun preserve to a remarkable extent the rustic appearance of Chinese villages that had largely disappeared or were transformed during the last century. Their street plans, architecture and decoration, and the integration of houses with comprehensive water systems are unique surviving examples. The variant architectural styles in Huizhou lent a kaleidoscopic view into the cultural fabric of the locality. Besides indicating social status and wealth, the buildings also tell us of the awe and respect traditional Chinese people felt towards their ancestors. This filial piety is a testimony to the Confucian mode of thought, also shown in the large number of grand ancestral halls. There are also many arches constructed to honor ancestors, officials, successful candidates for the imperial exams and chaste women.Reputed as "A Living Ancient Residential Museum", the ancient villages of Xidi and Hongcun were added to UNESCO's list of World Cultural Heritage sites in 2000. How do people evaluate the ancient villages in Southern Anhui? Their UNESCO listing recognizes the villages' worth as a gateway to the past, and architects refer to them as a living Museum of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Visitors see them as the most beautiful county on earth; photographers as the villages of traditional Chinese paintings. For the locals, it is just home in paradise.

[West Sea Scenic Area]
The West Sea, long known as the Mystery Valley for the many clusters of peaks and the fathomless depth of the valley, is one of the most important central scenic area. Consisting the mystical Peak Flying From Afar,Dispelling Cloud Pavilion where one commands an excellent view of the unfolding scene, the whole West Sea just likes a natural art gallery. When the sun sets, the whole valley basks in a myriad of sun rays, becoming a famous scene of the Yellow Mountains. Equally impressive is the 1,712 meter high Rosy Clouds Peak behind the Dispelling Cloud Pavilion. Standing on the peak, one can watch the sun rising above the cloud and Peak Flying From Afar and Nine Dragon Peak in all their grandeur.
[Jade Screen Pavilion Scenic Area]
This area is also called the front mountain consisting Jade Screen Pavilion, the Lotus Flower Peak the Heavenly Capital Peak.
The Jade Screen Pavilion used to be a famous Buddhist temple until it burned down in 1952 and was reconstructed as a guesthouse and restaurant. It is the midpoint on the western route, and the most photographed panorama of Huangshan, featuring a thousand rising peaks and spires and a single, stately pine tree, its boughs outstretched. Well known as the Welcoming Pine of Huangshan (Yingkesong), it is believed to be over a thousand years old.
With the elevation 1,835m, a climb of 800 steps seemingly straight up, the Lotus Flower Peak is the highest peak in the ranges. Nonetheless, the overlook on the top has become very popular.
With an elevation of 1,830 meters, the view on the summit of the Heavenly Capital Peak is really wonderful, though the way is the exhilaratingly steep and exposed stairway.
In this scenic area you can see all at once the four elements the Chinese traditionally demand of a perfect mountain landscape: soaring spires, grotesque pines, clear-running mountain streams, and seas of mist and cloud, just as the ancient dictum: Without reaching Jade Screen Pavilion, you cannot see the mountain; without climbing the the Heavenly Capital Peak, your trip is in vain.
[Cloud Valley Temple Area]
Located between the Alms Bowl Peak Buddha Peak, the Cloud Valley Area is the mid point from the North Sea Area back to the Hot Spring area. You can see old precious trees, such as the rare aged yellow Chinese fir and iron Chinese fir. You can also see the oddly shaped rocks and the Nine-Dragon Waterfall in this area.
