| Brief Introduction of Kashgar |
With a history of more than 2000
years, used to be a important hub on the Old Silk Road, Kashgar
is the most westerly city in China. A visit to Kashgar is like
going back in time, to the era of the Silk Road. The majority
of the people in Kashgar are Uighurs who still wear their traditional
costumes and lead a centuries old way of life. Every Sunday,
thousands of people throng in from far and wide to buy and sell
or simply for a day out at Kashgar’s famous Sunday Market.
Its narrow maze of alleyways and open air markets display all
the myriad faces of Central Asia with Uighur, Kirghiz, Tajik
and Kazakh merchants and locals, all busy haggling over camels
and sheep, brightly colored fabrics, fur hides and hats, handmade
carpets and knives.
Other sights in Kashgar include the 15th century Id Kakh Mosque,
the largest in China which sometime attracts up to 10,000 worshipers
and the Abakh Hoja Mausoleum, also known as the Mausoleum of
the Fragrant Concubine. |

| Kashgar Sightseeing Highlights |
[Id Kah Mosque]
The mosque, built in 1442, lies in the heart of Kashgar and
dominates Id Kah Square, a large square surrounded by bazaars
in the old city of Kashgar. It is the largest mosque in Xinjiang.
When the adjoining courtyards are taken into account, the mosque
is the largest in China. It can accommodate up to 20,000 people.
The Id Kah mosque contains many of the essential characteristics
of Islamic architecture. In addition to majestic courtyards,
the mosque has a domed roof and matching minarets adjoined to
its front. The Id Kah mosque like many larger mosques today
has replaced the traditional prayer caller (muezzin) with an
electronic sound system that projects the prayers of the imam
through loudspeakers. What really makes the mosque special is
the quiet and solitude one can feel as they pass through the
main gate in contrast to the bustling streets outside. Over
500 years it was rebuilt ten times by the people of Kashgar. |
[Karakuri
Lake]
Karakuri Lake, known as the father of glaciers, sits at an elevation
of 3600 meters and is located at the foot of Mount Maztagata.
It is an unspoiled place like Shangri-La with its dramatic and
spectacular natural scenery. The surface of the lake reflects
the snow-covered peaks of Mount Muztagata, which towers in the
background. Hikes and walks around here are refreshing, especially
in summer when flowers bloom and the air is fresh and pleasant. |
[Kashgar
Sunday Bazaar]
The market is a kind of agricultural market, that has expanded
to include anything you can think of, including clothing, knives,
and more.
As an expansion on the same theme, Kashgar is also home to a
weekly Sunday Market that takes place on the northeastern outskirts
of the city. Conservative estimates put that area at least 5,000
stalls that see traffic of around 100,000 people daily. Countless
merchants from many parts of the world would go to Kashgar to
trade and buy various wares so it was also known as "the
pearl on the Ancient Silk Road". The goods available include
pots and pans, arts and crafts, garments, knives, timber, coal,
and animals. |
[The Khunjerab Pass]
For centuries the Khunjerab Pass, lying some 400km south of Kashgar, was the key silk road crossing point between the Chinese world and the Indian subcontinent-and then to the whole western world. |
[Tomb
of Xiangfei]
The Tomb of Xiangfei is the most magnificent tomb in Kashgar,
filled with history and symbolism. The tomb is commonly known
among Chinese as the Tomb of Xiangfei, tomb known as the Xiang
Fei (Fragrant Concubine) Tomb is in memory of Abakh Khoja's
grand-daughter, Iparhan. She was the Fragrant Concubine of
Emperor Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty. After she died, her
remains were carried by sedan chair back to Kashgar.
It was built around 1640 as the familial cemetery of Abakh
Hoja, the son of the missionary who brought Sufism to Kashgar.
The buildings exhibit both Uygur and Arabic architectural
styles as well as some Buddhist symbols. At the site, the
main tomb hall is situated in the east. It's huge dome and
tall minarets dominate the site. There are also three mosques
and a teaching hall on the grounds.
