Situated in the southwest of Sichuan Province, setting beside the wide convergence of the Qingyi, Min and Dadu rivers, 180km from Chengdu and 50 km from Emei Shan, Leshan is a pretty little city with the population of 7000 and the history of 1300-year-old. Leshan has taken off as a popular tourist destination thanks to its main claim to fame –the towering Grand Buddha. The city has managed to retain a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and a wonder through its markets.
Most of visitors to the Great Buddha of Leshan set out from Chengdu in the morning, returning in the afternoon. Travelers to the nearby sacred mountain of Emeishan often stop at Leshan on their way to or from Chengdu. Early Spring and late aurumn are the most suitable season for tour. |

[The Giant Buddha or Grand Buddha of Leshan]
The Giant Buddha (Grand Buddha) of Leshan, carved out of a hillside in the 8th century and looking down on the confluence of three rivers: Dadu River, Min River, Qingyi River,at 71 m high, it is the largest Buddha in the world. Its shoulders are 28 meters broad and its head is 14.7 meters long and 10 meters broad. It took 90 years to complete this mammoth project, started from 713 A.D, completed in 803 A.D. Inside the body of the Giant Buddha, hidden from view, is a water-drainage system put into place to prevent weathering, although the stone statue has had its fare share of it. A pavilion used to shelter the Giant Buddha, but the building was destroyed during Ming Dynasty.
It was worth looking at the Giant Buddha from several angles from certain distance. Or you can also have a boat cruise pass by for a front view of it. |
