Brief Introduction Of Urumqi

Urumqi is the capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. In ancient times it was the only city on the northern route of the Old Silk Road to act as a center for tax collecting, administration and material supply. Urumqi has numerous natural and man-made sights, and is the place to experience modern Xinjiang.
The Xinjiang International Bazaar in Urumqi covers an area of 100,000 square meters, and is said to be the largest in the world. It combines shopping and entertainment, and there is also a mosque nearby. Urumqi's folklore street offers the chance to observe the folklore and sample food and beverages from various localities.
The bars in Urumqi are also well worth a visit, particularly the Red Tomato Bar, which is haunt of the local Xinjiang Uygur youth.
Urumqi is a must for any Xinjiang tour, not least because it has the largest international airport in northwest China operating eight international air routes, and is the hub of the Eurasian Continental Bridge.

Urumqi Sightseeing Highlights
Bogda PeakBogda Peak
Bogda Peak is Bogda Peak is the highest in the Bogda Ola Range, an eastern sub-range of the great Tianshan range. Although it is dwarfed by the 7,000-metre-plus-high peaks in the main range of Tianshan, its proximity to the provincial capital Urumqi has made it popular among mountaineers.
Red HillRed Hill
On the east bank of the Urumqi River, Red Hill, 910 meters high, at the very center of the city, resembles a mighty wriggling dragon. This reddish-brown hill is dotted with small pavilions and at the top stands a nine-storied, gray-brick pagoda called Zhenlong Pagoda (Pagoda to Suppress Dragons), 8 meters high, facing Yamalike Hill. With its emerald greenery and its religious pagoda and shrines, Red Hill is a landmark of the city.
Tianchi LakeUrumqi Tianchi Lake
Situated in the Tianshan range, 115 km northeast of Urumqi, Tianchi Lake is one of the main tourist attractions in China. The lake is hemmed in by majestic snow-crowned peaks west of Bogda Mountain and it is geologically a moraine lake 3,400 meters long, 1,500 meters wide, 1,980 meters above sea level. Covered firs, pines and cypresses and white snow, it boasts a spectacular sight- reminiscent of Switzerland or the Rocky mountains but somehow with more vibrancy and color. Amidst fields of wild flowers grow morel mushrooms, while peppermint and rhubarb, while higher up the mountain are edelweiss and the rare, creamy Snow Lotus, which grows from rock crevices and is believed to have magical powers as medical cure.
White Poplar GullyWhite Poplar Gully
White Poplar Gully is 75 kilometers south of Urumqi, in the Southern Mountain. Screened by snow-capped peaks and dotted with tall and straight dragon spruce trees, it is an ideal place to have an excursion. The Kazakh usually spend summer here between May and October and graze their herds. Traveling through this narrow verdant gully is a unique experience for sightseers who love natural scenery like snowcapped peaks, dragon-spruce trees and wild flowers
