Jilin Overview

Jilin province is located in the northeast China and center of northeast Asia which composed by Northeast China Japan, Korea, South Korea Mongolia and Russia, with longitude of 122 °- 131 °, north latitude of 41 ° - 46 °, covering area of 18,740,000 square kilometers which is 2% of national area of China. Jilin province is bordering Heilongjiang province in north, Liaoning in south, Inner Mongolia in west, Russia in east and Korea in southeast where bounded by Tumen River and Yalu River; the landscape is higher in southeast and lower in northwest, vast of plains in Midwest area. There are 8 cities and 1 minority prefecture in Jilin province; they are Changchun, Jilin, Siping, Tonghua, Baishan, Liaoyuan, Baicheng, Songyuan city and Yanbian Korea Autonomous Prefecture. Jilin province belongs to monsoon climate of medium latitudes, which provides a long winter season to Jilin from October to April and fascinating winter scenery and ski resorts here attracted tourists from home and aboard. The famous attractions in Jilin province are Ice Lantern Festival in Jilin City, Changbaishan (Changbai Mountain) and Heavenly Lake, Imperial Palace of Manchu State, Rime Island (Wu Song Island), Songhua Lake Area, Xianghai nature reserve, General's Tomb, Deshengtuo monument and so on.
   
Introduction of Jilin City
 Jilin City once was the capital of Jilin province and now is a prefecture-level city situated in hilly area near the Songhua River owning rich winter tourism resource and minorities (Manchu and Korea in China) history and culture.
Its original name is Girin Ula in Manchu language meaning the city along in riverside. To strengthen the frontier and resist the invasion, shipbuilding has constructed Jilin since Ming Dynasty(1368-1644). Thus, the city is also named as “Shipyard” In 1671, Emperor Kangxi in Qing Dynasty (1644-1912) sent General Ning Guta to stand and re-build Jilin City; the shipbuilding industry in Jilin was soon flourished. Three year later in 1674, Kangxi Emperor visited Jilin and wrote a poem described the busy river scene of Jilin where was known as River City later.
Ethnic folks and culture in Jilin
The integration of various nationalities enriches a specular lifeway and culture in Jilin City. There are 35 nationalities in Jilin City including Han, Manchu, Mongolia, Hui and Korea. The Korea residents in Jilin City are in populations of about 180,000. Korea people are skillful in singing and dancing in China. Xingguang Korea minority village is a famous folk spot where visitor can admire unique ethnic performance as well as delicious Korea cuisine. Jilin is one of the birth place and important inhabitation of Manchu minority. There are more than 140,000 populations of Manchu residents in Jilin City. Ula Manchu town in Yongji County is a typical Manchu inhabitation with buildings in Manchu style and strong Manchu Shamanism rites especially and wedding.  
 
Three kinds Lantern in Jilin City
1.    Ice Lantern. Jilin is the original birth place of Ice lantern. The wisdom people in Jilin City gradually fuse ice lantern with sculpture, modeling and architecture to create a new and bright ornamental art which became a characteristic of winter Jilin city and spread to Harbin, and Beijing the capital of China.
2.    Water Lotus Lantern.  The costume of lighting water lantern in Jilin City originated in beginning of Qing Dynasty (1368-1644). On 15th January in Chinese lunar calendar, locals will light river lanterns in Songhua River. Thousands of lotus lamps are full on the surface of river which is grand and fascinating.
3.    Colored Lantern. Jilin City has a long history of lighting lantern in Lantern Festival. Combined together with traditional folk costume and new technique of electric, light control and remote control, lanterns show are grander and more colorful than before since the holding of “Jilin International Rime Ice and Snow Festival”. There once exhibited 4,000 various kinds lantern on the festival.
   
The Rime in Jilin City 
In cold and windy day of winter season, most flowers have withered away in China, but there are full of blooming “ice flowers” in northeast China, which are the rime in Jilin City known by home and aboard. The rime on Songhua River as a gift from nature is a kind of weather phenomena known as one of the four natural wonders in China which gain equal reputation with Guilin landscape, Stone Forest in Kunming and the Three Gorges on Yangtze River. The best time for enjoy the sight of rime in Jilin is annual December to next February. The best places are Rime Island( Wusong Island) and Songjiang Road in Jilin City.
