Yuantong Temple Travel Guide

Yuantong Temple is the most important and biggest Buddhist temple in Yunnan Province. It is also the teaching ground of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva.
With a history of more than 1,200 years, it is famous for the unique mixed architectural style of the Yuan (1271-1368 A.D) and Ming (1368-1644 A.D) Dynasties. Most of the complex buildings in the temple were built in Ming and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911 A.D). Yuantong Temple plays a very important role both in history and in the modern world.
The temple is located on the south side of Yuantong Hill, and in the temple are numerous scenic spots, and a pool reserved for setting captive fish free (Fangshengchi). On the 1st and 15th of each lunar month, people gather here to take part in all kinds of Buddhist services. There is also a good vegetarian restaurant on the premises serving lunch and dinner.

Traffic:

Yuantong Temple is conveniently located in the northern area of the city on Yuantong Jie. The easiest way to reach the temple is by taxi from the city center, which should cost CNY10.
