Tangra Yumco Travel Guide

Tangra Yumco, with another name of Dangla Lake, is the biggest holy lake in Tibetan Bonism and the third largest lake in Tibet. It situated at Xainza County of Naqu Area, north of Tibet. The lake, looks like a sole, is surrounded by mountains in west, south and north.

Tangra Yumco was formed in three millions years ago, locating at a deep bottom of a lake basin, stretching from northeast to southwest by 80 kilometers. It became a plateau scenic spot combining natural reserve and landscape.

The lake is near to the Ruins of Ancient Zhang Zhung Kingdom, 150 kilometers from Nima County. Probably because of its terrain easy to hold but hard to attach and good climate, the nearby area of Tangra Yumco was original place of the Ancient Zhang Zhung Kingdom. There is a temple built in a hanging cave near the lake. It is said that this temple was the oldest temple in Bonism. Tangra Yumco attracts many Pilgrims and travelers to circle it. Buddhists circle the lake by clockwise; while Bonists circle by anticlockwise. For thousands of years, the circling route has been stepped as a gently path.
