Namcha Barwa Mountain Travel Guide

Mt. Namcha Barwa, with height of 7782 meters, ranking No. 28 among the global highest mountains, is the highest mountain in Nyingchi Prefecture. Its huge triangle peak is covering snows and clouds all year round. In Tibetan language, Namcha Barwa have many meanings, like flaming like flash and fire, spear piercing sky, and stone falling down from sky.

It is not exaggerated to say that Namcha Barwa stretches across tropical and frigid zones, is an exceptional natural museum. Namcha Barwa has three ridges, northwestern ridge, northeastern ridge, and southern ridge. The northeastern ridge zigzags 30 km north to the Yarlung Zangpo River bank, thus to form the warm moist flow in India Ocean. Therefore, the area of Namcha Barwa has the most favorable condition and climate in the Himalayas.

In this area, the rain season lasts from May to September. Especially in July, August and September, it’s rainy all the way. The peaks are surrounded by clouds. The weather from November to next April is mainly for sunshine. So, it’s best to do mountaineering in February, March, April, October and November.

Since 1982, National Mountaineering Team and Mountaineering Team of Tibet Autonomous Region began to mountaineer to Namcha Barwa. Also, Chinese Academy of Science organized a comprehensive scientific research team to do a large-scale search to Namcha Barwa and made science and education film, as well as TV documentary.

Traffic:

Depart east from Lhasa to Bayi Town through Kang-Zang Highway, and continue moving to Milin County. From Milin to Paiqu along Yalung Zangpo River. And then arrive at Graga and walk to the base of Namcha Barwa.
