Tibet Overview

Tibet Autonomous Region, the root of the world with an area of 1.2 million square kilometers, situates at southwestern border area in China, lies north to Xinjiang Uygur Region, northeast to Qinghai Province, east to Sichuan Province, and south to Burma, India, Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim, Kashmir and so on. The borderline is long to 4000 km. Tibet has reputation with the grand magnificent landscape, mysterious culture, long history, pious religion. Tibet has not only the snowy scenery in north and west areas, but also the enchanting southern scenery of trees and lakes. This combination attracts millions of travelers every year. Until now, the living habits of Tibetan people are quite different from modern people. Because of the difference, Tibet is thus unreachable, attractive and mysterious.

Tibet is one of the most isolated parts of the world. The massive Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau is at an average height of 4500 meters above sea level and guarded on all sides by towering mountain ranges, such as Nyencheng Tanglha Mountains, Himalayas. The Himalayas separate Tibet from India, Nepal, and Bhutan to the south, the Karakoram from Pakistan to the west. The plateau is also an original place to some of the greatest rivers of Asia, with the Yangtze River, Mekong River, Yellow River and Salween River in the east, and Indus, Yarlung Tsangpo River, Sutlej and some feeder rivers of the Ganges in the west nest Mountain Kailash.

Tibet, got the name in Qing Dynasty, the last feudal dynasty in China, and was renamed Tibet Autonomous Region since the foundation in 1965.Tibet has popularity of nearly 3 million people. The popularity is mainly gathering in east and south. Tibet is one of the five autonomous regions in China. In Tibet, there are still other minorities except Tibetan, such as Han, Hui, Moinba, Lhoba, Sherpa, Deng, and so on.

The best time to travel Tibet is from April to October, away from coldest months. June to September is the humid months when blocked roads and rushing rivers make travel difficult but the countryside is at its greenest. However, health condition is not as soon as other provinces so travelers shouldn’t pay much high expectation to the condition of living and eating.
