Giant Buddha Temple Travel Guide

Located in the West Minzhu Street of Ganzhou District, the temple was first built in 1098 during the Western Xia Dynasty. It gets the name because of the largest indoor clay recumbent Buddha statue of China in the temple. In 1996, the temple was listed by the State Council as a major historic and cultural site under state protection.

The temple consists of archway-style gate, Hall of Four Heavenly Kings, Main Hall Recumbent Buddha and so on. The two-storey main hall is 33 meters tall. The clay statue of Sakyamuni is the largest indoor clay Buddha statue in China, with heighth of 34.5 meters, shoulder measurement of 7.5 meters, ear length of 4 meters and foot length of 5.2 meters. A miidle finger of the Buddha statue can provide space for a person to lie low while a ear for eight persons to sit side by side. The painted statue is very lifelike. Inside the templethere are thousands of scrolls of Buddhist sutras between 1436 and 1449 in the Ming Dynasty and many other Buddhist treasures.
