Lhasa Overview

Lhasa, also known as “A City of Sunlight”, is the capital of Tibet Autonomous Region with more than 1300 years history. Lhasa is the center of politics, economy, culture and religion in Tibet and one of the most attractive cities in Tibet region because of its magnificent nature scenery, rich and unique folk culture and pure religious believes.
Located on the basin of Yarlung Tsangpo River, the north bank of Kyichu River, Lhasa is on east longitude of 91°06′, north latitude of 29°36′, at the altitude of over 3,650 meters as a truly plateau city, bordering Nyingchi prefecture on the east, Shigatse prefecture on the west, Nakchu prefecture on the north and Lhoka Prefecture(Shannan prefecture) on the south.
Lhasa has history of more than 1,300 years. Lhasa has become the capital of Tibet after the King Srongtsen Gampo conquered his neighboring tribes to reunify Tibet as Tu-Bo Kingdom on 7 A.D. After Tibet liberated peacefully from serf system to socialist society on 23rd May 1951; Lhasa city has new developed and gradually become a unique ethnic modern city in decade’s years.

There are most hundred scenic spots and historic sites in Lhasa boasting grand snow mountain and glacial scenery, vast and beautiful grassland of Damxung glassland(Dangxiong glassland), holy lake of Lake Namco and the unique Yangbajing hot spring, grand Tibetan monasteries, typical of The Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Temple and Sera Temple, unique historical sites of Yaowangshan cliff statues and rich ethnic culture and customs of Tibetan dance, Tibetan song, and Tibetan opera.
On the general impression, people believes that Lhasa city is parted with The Potala Palace, Barkhor Street, Jokhang Temple, Drepung Temple, Sera Temple and Kyichu River(Lhasa River). However, local take considered that the proper Lhasa city should be area of Jokhang Temple and Bakhor Street which constructed around Jokhang temple on the east of Lhasa city, where is the essence of Lhasa old town and the worthiest part for visiting to admire the truly holy city in Tibet.

Lhasa is a worth to travel around a year except cold winter.
