Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area Travel Guide

Brief Introduction
The Jiuzhaigou Valley Scenic and Historic Interest Area occupies an area of 720 sq km with an outlying protection belt of 600 sq km, most of the area being covered by forests. The main valley, more than 50 km long, consists of three gullies, forming a "Y" shape. Altogether there are 114 lakes, 17 groups of waterfalls, 5 calcareous tufashoals, 47 springs, and 11 torrents. It got its name because there are nine Tibetan villages in the valley. As it is a remote place with unusually charming scenery and few inhabitants, it is often called the "wonderland on earth."

The valley, surrounded by snow-capped mountains, is covered with luxuriant primitive forests and dotted by more than a hundred lakes and ponds of various sizes. At the bottom of the clear blue lakes, stones and waterwheels twinkle in the sun, producing a rainbow of colors. As the valley is of a terraced topography, waterfalls are created between lakes on different levels, the biggest drop being over twenty meters. The roaring sound of the falls echoes through the valley.

The lakes in Jiuzhaigou are pure and transparent, clear, quiet, and colorful. The blue sky, white clouds, snow-capped mountains, tree shadows and charming springs combine to form a colorful scroll painting with distinct gradations. With the changes of the seasons, illumination and environment, the scenery varies in the area. The numerous waterfalls, located at various elevations, some falling slowly, some falling slimly, also present a fantastic sight.

The valley is home to a great variety of plants and rare animals, such as the giant panda, lesser panda, golden monkey, and antelope. The geological structure is complicated with a wide distribution of carbonate rocks and the splitting and transformation of the folds. Dueto the strong movement of the new structure and the great magnitude of the earth crust´s lift, as well as multiple forces, the valley developed a variety of landforms.

Rich Natural Heritage
Jiuzhaigou is situated in a zone where Qinghai-Tibet Plateau slopes down to Sichuan Basin. The geological structure is complicated with a wide distribution of carbonate rocks and the splitting and transformation of the folds. Due to the strong movement of the new structure and the great magnitude of the earth crust´s lift, as well as multiple forces, the valley developed a variety of landforms.

Mountains with an elevation of 4,000¡«4,800 m covers 28%of the total area and the remains of the glaciers in the Quaternary period are rich in their types and best preserved in our Country.

Because the mountains were cut fairly deep, resulting in great differences in height, the distribution of the plants is distinct here. There are more than 2,000 higher plants, and more than 400 lower ones. Many ancient relic plants are well kept here. Within the area there are 17 species of rare animals, among which the giant panda, ox-antelope, and golden monkey are designated as first-class state-protected animals.
