The Church of the Saviour Travel Guide

The Church of the Saviour, also named Xishiku Church or Beitang in Chinese, literally the North Church, is a historic Catholic church in the Xicheng District, Beijing, China. In all the cathedrals and churches in Beijing, the Xishiku church is one of the most ornate and magnificent. The church was originally established by the Jesuits in the year of 1703 near Zhongnanhai (beneath the Forbidden City), on land bestowed by the Kangxi Emperor of the Qing Dynasty to the Jesuits in 1694."Kangxi" wrote in his own hand the calligraphy board and couplets for the church. It was named "Saviour Church" and officially opened on February, 1703.In 1887 the church was moved and rebuilt at its current location, at No. 33, Xishiku Avenue, Xicheng District. Phone number is 0086 10 66175198. The church is also where the Beijing Bishop Office is located and it is affiliated with the Patriotic Catholic Church of China.
