Dunhuang Overview

Anciently called “shazhou”, Dunhuang is within Jiuquan city and the west end of Hexi Corridor, serving as a fortress on the ancient Silk Road. “Dun” in the name means large and “Huang” means prosperity. Chinese, Indian, Greek and Islamic civilizations gather here and leave profound historic accumulation and splendid cultural imprint.

As a famous historic and cultural city and a top tourist city of China, Dunhuang has many places of historic interest and scenic beauty. Mogao Grottoes, incorporated into the World Cultural Heritage List in 1987, enjoy the fame of “pearl of oriental art”, whose perfect combination of ancient architecture, frescos and sculptures is highly praiseful; Mingsha Hill and Crescent Moon Spring are the miraculous natural scenes bestowed by the nature, with sand singing while mountain and spring coexist; Yadan Landscapes, colloquially called devil city, is another amazing natural scene where people can see maginifcent view such as “solitary smoke in the desert” and “blood-red setting sun”.
