The cathedral is located in No. 56 Yide Road, Guangzhou, its name is from its birthday -in June 18, 1863, the Sacred heart Day, the foundation stone laying ceremony was held. 25 years later, the largest and most magnificent cathedral in Canton even in China was completed.
It is one of the most beautiful existing cathedrals in China. The feature of the architecture is the double towering Gothic rooftop. Furthermore, it is one of the four stone-made Gothic Churches all over the world (the other three are Notre Dame De Paris, Westminster Abbey London and Cologne Cathedral). All the walls and pillars are made of granite. The church has more than 130 years history.
The Shishi Sacred Heart Cathedral covers an area of 2,754 square meters; 35 meters wide from east to west, 78.69 meters long from north to south, and 58.5 meters high from the ground to the spire.
The surrounding of the Cathedral are really interesting, here is one of the largest food and spices markets in Guangzhou(Canton), after visiting the Cathedral, you could walk around for dried seafood and spices.
