Longshan Grottoes Travel Guide

Longshan Grottoes are the largest existing group of yuan dynasty (1271-1368 AD) Taoist grottoes in China. 

Longshan grottoes are located at the top of Longshan mountain, 20 kilometers southwest of Taiyuan city. There are 66 Taoist statues, Phoenix, dragon, crane and other stone sculptures in eight grottoes. Although the grottoes are not large in scale, they have unique carving techniques. Round face, heavy clothing, simple lines, rough style, rich life atmosphere. Most of the Grottoes in China are of Buddhist themes, but th grottoes of Longshan are very different. They are all the gods of Taoism and the ancestors who set up the gate. Up to now, they are the only Yuan Dynasty Taoist grottoes in the world. They are called the representative works of Taoist statues of Yuan Dynasty.
