The Shaanxi History Museum is situated in the southern suburb of Xian City. Since it was opened to the public in 1991, it is the first-class museum in China.

The museum occupies an area of 65,000 square meters (16 acres).
This roomy, modern museum contains over 370,000 relics chronicling Shaanxi civilization and culture from as far as prehistoric times. The collection is strong in ceramics, bronzes, jade pieces, gold and silver items, ancient coins, and calligraphy mainly from the pre-Ming periods.

The two-storied primary pavilion is divided into three main exhibition halls: the Basic Exhibition Hall, marked by time order, is composed of the No. 1, 2 and 3 exhibition halls. The Theme Exhibition hall is usually features a variety of theme exhibitions to show the history or culture relics of Shaanxi province. The East Exhibition Hall is used for contemporary exhibitions of high quality.

Shaanxi Province is the birthplace of the ancient Chinese civilization. So The Shaanxi Provincial Museum is the symbol of Chinese civilization.

The museum is furnished with central air-conditioning and multi-functional lighting system to ensure the protection of the culture relics.
