Pujiu Temple: A Millennium-Old Sanctuary of Love

Tracing the Story of The Romance of the West Chamber


Hidden in Yongji, Shanxi Province, Pujiu Temple is a Tang-dynasty Buddhist temple where solemn Zen architecture meets one of China’s most famous love stories. A visit here feels like stepping back through time, blending spiritual tranquility with timeless romance.


Originally built during the reign of Empress Wu Zetian in the Tang Dynasty, Pujiu Temple is renowned as the setting of The Romance of the West Chamber (Xi Xiang Ji), one of China’s greatest classical dramas. Because of this legendary love story, the temple is widely known as a “Sacred Place of Love.”

1. Bell Tower

The tallest structure within the temple complex. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the temple and its surroundings. Listen to the morning bells and evening drums, and experience the serenity and dignity of this ancient sanctuary.

2. Pear Blossom Courtyard

The very place where the story of The Romance of the West Chamber unfolds. Ancient trees and a quiet, elegant setting create a poetic atmosphere. Here, visitors can trace the love story of Zhang Sheng and Cui Yingying and appreciate the charm of classical Chinese drama.


3. Eternal Love Lock
Located in the central square, this large lock is engraved with the names of countless couples, symbolizing everlasting love. Couples can place their own lock here to wish for a lasting relationship.

4. Mahavira Hall (Hall of the Great Hero)
The main hall enshrining a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. Inside, exquisite murals depict Buddhist stories, offering insight into Buddhist culture and traditional mural art.

5. Bodhisattva Cave
A natural limestone cave housing a statue of Guanyin (the Bodhisattva of Compassion). Filled with incense and devotion, it is a popular place for prayers and blessings, reflecting Guanyin’s mercy and wisdom.
