Explore Huangshizhai: Top Scenic Spots in Zhangjiajie

Huangshizhai is the most famous scenic area within Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. There’s a well-known saying: “He who doesn’t visit Huangshizhai hasn’t truly been to Zhangjiajie.”
It is home to the most concentrated natural wonders in the park and represents the very essence of Zhangjiajie’s unique landscape.

The area features over twenty major attractions, including the Heavenly Book Treasure Box, Southern Heaven Pillar, Natural Mural, Star-Picking Platform, Heizongnao, Remains of the Heavenly Bridge, Mandarin Duck Spring, and more.

Heavenly Book Treasure Box

Located on the mountainside of Huangshizhai, this round stone pillar is topped with two layered rocks — one thick and one thin — resembling a half-opened book chest. Legend has it that this “treasure box” was left behind by a celestial king, giving the site its poetic name.

Southern Heaven Pillar

Renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain in January 2010, this world-famous rock pillar inspired the floating mountains of Pandora in the movie Avatar. Its striking shape and dramatic cliffs make it one of Zhangjiajie’s most photographed landmarks.

Natural Mural

Near the summit of Huangshizhai, when looking east toward Yaozizhai, you can see cliff faces covered with weathered patterns and patches of vegetation. Together they form a massive “natural mural,” evoking the rustic charm and vitality of Tujia culture.

Star-Picking Platform

At the eastern tip of Huangshizhai’s summit, a narrow ridge stretches about 100 meters and ends at a terrace made of two stacked sandstone slabs. Standing here, you feel as if you could reach up and pick the stars — a breathtaking spot for sunrise and panoramic views.

Heizongnao (Black Fir Knoll)

Located on the northern plateau of Huangshizhai, this site is named after its dense, dark fir forest. Surrounded by towering cliffs, it remains a pristine area of untouched wilderness, forming a natural fortress above deep valleys.

Remains of the Heavenly Bridge

To the northwest of Huangshizhai stand several oval-shaped stone pillars, each more than 200 meters tall. They line up across a 3-kilometer gorge between Huangshizhai and Yuanjiajie, resembling the remnants of an ancient stone bridge suspended in the clouds.

Mandarin Duck Spring

Also known as “White Sand Well,” this spring lies where the Huangshizhai trail meets the Huaxiyu route. Clear water flows over fine white sand that glitters like silver. The spring’s water is famously sweet, and local folklore celebrates it as a symbol of pure and enduring love.

Three Sisters Peaks

About two kilometers southwest of Couple Rock rise three slender peaks resembling three graceful young women. Legend tells that they were flower fairies turned into stone after bravely defying the Dragon King to save the local villagers.

A Thousand-Mile Reunion

Further downstream from Zicaotan, two peaks face each other across the valley, like a husband and wife reunited after a long separation. One appears tall and heroic, the other gentle and elegant — together forming a touching natural tableau of affection and reunion.

The Sea-Calming Needle

From the eastern trail of Huangshizhai, a tall, slender stone pillar rises from a green valley. When mist fills the gorge, it stands like a steadfast pillar holding back the waves — hence the name “Sea-Calming Needle.” Nearby, a rock resembling the Monkey King (Sun Wukong) seems to watch over it, recalling the legendary scene of him retrieving his golden staff.

Southern Heaven Gate

On the southeastern slope of Huangshizhai, a tilted rock peak and a massive cliff form a natural archway that faces south. The misty passage, framed by trees and clouds, recalls the mythical Gate of Heaven. To the right stands a 20-meter-tall stone formation resembling a mighty guardian general, as if protecting the gate.

Huangshizhai Cableway

The Huangshizhai Cableway stretches 973 meters with a height difference of 430 meters. Built jointly by the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park Administration and Taiwan Ruizhan Company, with main equipment imported from France’s POMA Group, it has safely carried millions of visitors since its opening in 1997.
Certified by ISO9001, ISO14001, and GB/T28001, the cableway was named China’s No. 1 among the “Top Ten Cableways” by the China Cableway Association in 2005 for its safety and service excellence.
