Guangzhou is located in the southern China’s Pearl River Delta and has a typical subtropical monsoon climate. Its weather is marked by distinct characteristics: although the four seasons are less sharply defined than in northern China, temperature, humidity and precipitation vary greatly. The city is warm and humid year-round, with abundant rainfall and some unique weather phenomena during seasonal transitions.
I. Temperature: Long summer, short winter; pleasant spring and autumn
Summer (May–October): Long, hot and very humid.
Hottest month: July, with average highs around 33 °C and lows around 26 °C. Daytime temperatures often exceed 35 °C; nights hover near 28 °C, producing an almost stifling heat (high temperature plus high humidity).
“Dog days of summer” (mid-July to mid-August): The hottest period of the year.
Winter (late December–February): Short and relatively mild, though occasional cold snaps occur.
Coldest month: January, with average highs near 18 °C and lows near 10 °C. Extreme lows can drop below 5 °C, but subzero temperatures are exceedingly rare.
Damp chill: Although temperatures aren’t very low, high humidity and the absence of central heating mean it often feels colder than the thermometer indicates—especially on overcast, rainy days.
Spring (March–April) & Autumn (late October–November): Transitional seasons and the most comfortable times of year.
Temperatures: In spring, daytime highs climb from about 15 °C to above 25 °C; in autumn, they fall from nearly 30 °C to around 20 °C.
Features: Mild sunshine, gentle breezes and moderate humidity make these seasons the most pleasant.
II. Precipitation: Clear wet and dry seasons; strong typhoon influence
Rainy season (April–September): Accounts for roughly 80 % of annual rainfall.
Early monsoon (April–June): Dominated by warm, moist summer monsoons and frontal systems (stationary fronts, shear lines).
Persistent rain: Extended periods (days to weeks) of overcast, drizzly weather—known locally as the “Dragon Boat rains” (late May to mid-June).
Frequent strong convection: Heavy downpours, thunderstorms, sudden squalls and even hailstorms can occur, often causing urban flooding.
Late monsoon (July–September): Influenced mainly by tropical cyclones (typhoons) and their outer circulations.
Typhoon rains: When a typhoon makes landfall or passes nearby, it brings torrential rain and gale-force winds, contributing significantly to Guangzhou’s annual rainfall but also posing flood and wind damage risks.
Afternoon thunderstorms: Localized thermal heating often triggers strong afternoon or evening showers and thunderstorms.
Dry season (October–March): Rainfall drops sharply.
Characteristics: Predominantly clear, dry weather with few, light showers.
Autumn-winter dryness: November through January is the driest period, with lower relative humidity and occasional light haze.
“Return-to-south” humidity (huinantian): from late February to early April, after a cold air outbreak, warm, moist air rapidly returns. When it meets still-cool surfaces (walls, furniture, etc.), heavy condensation occurs, leading to foggy, damp conditions—floors and walls “sweat,” laundry won’t dry, and it feels oppressively humid.
III. Notable Weather Phenomena & Their Impacts
“Return-to-South” humidity (huinantian): A hallmark of Lingnan spring; requires vigilant dehumidification.
Typhoons: A major summer–autumn threat—bring high winds, heavy rain and storm surges; close attention to warnings and precautions is essential.
Severe convective weather: Frequent in spring and summer; sudden heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds pose safety risks.
Damp cold in winter: Unlike the dry cold of northern China, Guangzhou’s winter dampness penetrates buildings; indoor heating and insulation merit consideration.
Haze (autumn–winter): Under dry, stable conditions, air quality may deteriorate, occasionally causing light smog.
Guangzhou’s climate is characterized by warmth, humidity and a pronounced rain-heat seasonality. The long, hot summer brings stifling heat, heavy rains and typhoons; the brief winter is mild yet damp, with occasional cold blasts; and spring and autumn are short but very pleasant—though spring requires vigilance against the return-to-south humidity. The alternation of a pronounced rainy season (April–September) and a dry season (October–March) governs precipitation patterns. Understanding these rhythms—especially the risks of heavy rain, typhoons and winter–spring humidity—is crucial for daily life, travel and economic activities in the region.
