Air: There are daily flights to and from Beijing (a little more than one and a half hours), Shanghai (one and a half hours), Guangzhou (two and a half hours), and Xian (one hour and forty minutes), as well as infrequent flights to and from Tianjin (one and a half hours), Chengdu (about two hours),Nanjing (one and a half hours) and Hong Kong (two hours and forty minutes).

Train: It is by no means an overstatement to claim that Shanxi´s transport is mainly shouldered by train. This is not hard to understand, since Shanxi transports all its coal exports to other provinces by train. Bus: Buses are frequently used by locals for intra-province transport, as well as for transporting tourists to outlying destinations such as Datong and Wutaishan Mountain.

City transport: All kinds of buses and minibuses traverse the city proper, offering great convenience for local people as well as backpacking tourists.Quite a number of buses and trams can be found at the afore-mentioned May First Square, although for non Chinese speakers finding their routes may prove hard. Taxis will generally not be more than RMB10 for most areas of the city.
